Raise Your Hair Care IQ

You invest a lot in your hair care. You keep up on all the latest styles; use the highest quality products and your styling tools are all labeled with well-known names in the industry- and yet your hair doesn't look as healthy or as shiny as it should and the style is never quite what you want. So, what's the problem?

It may not be what you are using on your hair, but how you are using it. There's definitely a right way and a wrong way to shampoo, condition, and style. If you are doing it the wrong way- and many of us are- you can have the best, most expensive products and the result will still be less that what you want.

Shampooing

• Prepare your hair by combing through it with a wide-tooth comb to get out all the tangles. Use a light mist of Conditioning Spray to reduce friction.

• Wet your hair in the shower, letting the water flow down like a waterfall. Luke warm water works best with shampoos. Hot water and shampoo causes color to fade faster on growing hair and hair extensions.

• Put a small amount of shampoo in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together to distribute evenly through your fingers. Comb the shampoo through your hair starting about one-inch from your scalp. Work the shampoo into a lather by massaging your scalp with the palms of your fingers. Don’t mix your hair all over your head; the more you do, the more tangled it gets. Use a recommended shampoo that is formulated for the proper balance of cleaning with out stripping moisture levels needed to maintain healthy hair. The most important objective of
shampooing is to clean your hair and scalp, not tangle your hair.

• Rinse. It is not necessary to repeat. It’s not necessary to do the “rinse and repeat” routine unless you have an oily scalp.

• Dry your hair by carefully blotting it with a friction-free, absorbent towel. Carefully squeeze out any excess moisture. You don’t want to cause any more damage to your hair by pulling and rubbing it too harshly. A good hair shammy is actually healthier for drying your hair than a towel for several reasons. First, towels are washed with fabric softener that leaves a coating that makes them less absorbent. And, the loops of the weave on the towel have a tendency to snag hair and lead to additional breakage.

Conditioning

• Don’t condition your roots because it is the healthiest hair on your head and conditioning can cause limpness in the over all style or problems with any hair extensions. Focus on the middle of the hair shaft down to the ends. The ends are more damaged than the hair closer to your scalp.

• After thoroughly rinsing shampoo, apply conditioner to the palm of your hand rub palms together to evenly distribute. Apply conditioner from the middle of the hair shaft down to ends. Comb through hair to distribute product evenly. rinse thoroughly standing under the shower and letting the water flow over your hair like a waterfall. Before you are done, rinse with cooler water to help seal the hair’s cuticles, for shine and less tangles.

• A pre-conditioner can add additional protein to your hair. Apply it prior to using your conditioner.

Drying
